Meet Nuoceans: the sandals born from the sea
There's a moment on almost every beach in Southeast Asia where you'll find them — abandoned flip-flops, bleached by the sun, half-buried in the sand. Most people walk past. Three university friends didn't.
Valentina, Hadrien and Terence founded Nuoceans not with a business plan or a big investor, but with a simple, stubborn question: why are we making more stuff when there's already too much? The answer, they decided, was right there on the shore.

Flip-flops are one of the world's most popular shoes — cheap, cheerful and nearly indestructible. That last part is the problem. They don't break down. They drift. They accumulate on coastlines in extraordinary numbers. Nuoceans saw that not as a crisis to lament, but as a material to work with.
Working with Trash Hero, the team rescues thousands of discarded flip-flops from Southeast Asian beaches every year. They're sorted by colour, cleaned, shredded into small pieces and heat-pressed into sheets — the signature colourful midsole that sits at the heart of every Nuoceans sandal. Each sheet is entirely unique. Some run darker, some lighter; some lean red or blue or green. No two pairs are the same.
Those sheets are then shipped to Spain, where skilled workers hand-assemble them with the rest of the sandal's components — a recycled cork footbed, vegan straps, and a recycled EVA outsole — into the finished pair.
Every component is chosen deliberately, and Nuoceans are refreshingly honest about what's still a work in progress.

All materials are vegan — not as a marketing angle, but because the team believes it should simply be the standard. A cleaner future means fewer resources used, less harm caused, and no life — human or animal — paying the price for fashion.
Valentina is Austrian — an athlete and traveller who turns conviction into action, shaping the brand's values from the inside out. Hadrien, from Belgium, brings heart, humour and steady determination. Terence, from the UK, is proof that caring deeply about the planet and enjoying life are not mutually exclusive. Three countries, three personalities, one shared refusal to look away from a problem they could actually do something about.
