Behind the Brand: Bulibasha
Bulibasha is a contemporary footwear brand creating unique delicate sandals designed for style and comfort using natural tropical palm and coconut leaf threads that are skillfully hand woven by empowered local communities.
In the words of the brand:
"We embrace an artisanal craftsmanship through hand weaving skills that is rooted and passed down through generations, and is also kind to the environment. Our mission is to create a sustainable income for rural Balinese households, where employment would otherwise be unavailable. By engaging local communities through fair trade, we are able to support their additional means of livelihood.
Bulibasha is a socially driven business that aims to create a positive social change by making a real difference to the lives of the communities that support our cause."
Bulibasha's footwear is entirely handmade and weaving the sandal vamps can take up to two days to make. Despite the prevalent craft art in Bali and their familiarity in natural weaving materials, none were introduced to Bulibasha’s particular hand weaving techniques yet.
Soon after teaching one household these new weaving skills, an entire neighbourhood street started working together to deliver exceptional work and create a signature style of Bulibasha sandals. All artisans work from home and in their own time frame to allow them to tend to their household and care for their children.
Bulibasha is Inspired by the Moroccan art of weaving in combination with the brand's own flair. They created a delicate shoe design that combines comfort and natural materials . The vamp of the sandals is made of coconut and palm leaves, that are harvested and treated in the most environmentally friendly ways through the support of Indonesian local communities and small businesses.
