Behind the Brand: Cloe Cassandro

Not many brands encapsulate the summer spirit as well as our very own Cloe Cassandro. Sustainably made in Bali, Cloe produces go-to holiday pieces and resort wear that we simply can't get enough of.  We were delighted to catch up with her to ask a few questions about what makes the brand tick. Enjoy...

Tell us about your production process in Bali?

Everything is handmade from start to finish, we design our prints in London, send the artwork to Bali - they get made into batik blocks, then the plain fabric is bought, the blocks get printed onto fabric using wax - the fabric is then washed and dries in the sunshine. Then the fabric is taken to the tailors, who all work from home. Then goes through quality control.

Why is it important for you to work with these traditional methods?

It’s how we’ve always worked, we have always worked with artisans and that was the main appeal working with Bali. Supporting local communities and individuals rather then factories.

What are some of the challenges of running a sustainable label?

I would say not being there and keeping an eye on the processes, things like shipping - the list is endless.. I identify more with being ethical then true through and through sustainable.

And what are the advantages?

Learning, developing, growing, it’s a process to be truly sustainable through and through.

Lastly, a little bit about the design direction of the new collection?

We’ve gone back to basics, with a touch of newness. For example the Andrea shirts and Andrea Maxis and sarongs we’ve been selling consistently for almost 20 years.. Saying that it’s been great to see the response to our new crochet pieces and the very sexy Lola Dress.
