Danish fashion and lifestyle brand Skall Studio was founded in 2014 by the sisters Julie and Marie Skall, way before conscious fashion became a common word in the industry.

With a focus on orderliness in all aspects of the production, fur and leather free collections and styles in natural materials made to last season after season as well as a heart for craftsmanship, Skall Studio is known as a value-based brand, striving to make a difference in the fashion industry. This is all rooted in a strong family story.

The Skall story began in the coastal area of Northern Jutland around the 20th century where Julie and Marie’s great-grandfather and his brothers collected seashells on the beach and sold them for chicken feed to earn a living. This is also how the family got its last name Skall, meaning seashell in Danish.

Many years later the Skall sisters walked the same beaches – and became fascinated by the seashells which they collected in their small buckets, without knowing how essential these shells would later become. “Everything is connected,” is the sisters most important saying.

Today the seashells are still an endless source of inspiration. The seashells not only remind the sisters of the nature in Northern Jutland that they grew up in and feel extremely connected to. It also reminds them of a family story where nature, animals and humans were able to benefit from each other, in a simple circular system – and their ancestors’ simple way of living. That less is enough. Values that the sisters wish to pass on to everyone buying a Skall piece.

“Well made workmanship that lasts the test of time and high-quality fabrics that age with beauty.”

MATERIALS & PRODUCTION
Organic Cotton and Linen
Skall's cotton and linen styles are mainly made in India. Firstly, because Julie and Marie Skall have a close connection to the country where they have lived and worked before founding Skall Studio but also because the Indian people are very skilled at making these styles. Marie went to India for the first time in 2010, Julie followed in 2012 - and they immediately fell in love with the vibrant atmosphere and the Indian approach to life.
Most of the cotton and linen styles are made in a GOTS certified family run factory  in Delhi, today run by two sisters. The Skall sisters knew the factory before founding Skall Studio, just as their mother who knew the factory through her work within the industry. Julie and Marie try to visit the factory twice a year - not only to follow the production at first hand but also because they consider the factory owners and team part of the Skall family.

Danish Knitwear

Since Skall's first collection their signature knitwear has been made in Denmark. It is essential to the founders to support local craftsmanship as well as other crafts around the world as they believe traditional crafts have strong cultural roots worth protecting in a globalized world. At the same time, animal welfare is one of their core values. At Hjelholt spinning mill the team can follow each step closely – and be sure that the animals thrive.

Hjelholt spinning mill located in the beautiful island Funen is one out of two remaining spinning mills in Denmark. Since 1878 the Hjelholt family has gained wool from their own organic sheep and today the mill is run by 4th generation, still valuing the traditional craftsmanship. Skall's Danish knitwear begins with the Hjelholt sheep, thriving in the beautiful nature of Funen.
