The March Issue 2020

Such a busy month ahead. March is always a jam-packed full month with so many new arrivals coming in, lots of events and gearing up to spring finally arriving. It's still cold but the days are getting longer and longer. Just as well as there is so much to do! Here are some top tips from us on what to get your teeth into this month.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

March 8th - International Women's Day has a lot to do with ethical fashion. The date itself commemorates a protest of 15,000 female garment industry workers in New York on March 8th 1908. The same day the following year, women immigrant workers staged a 3 month strike against the unfair conditions they were forced to work in at sweatshops. Women make up over 70% of the workforce in the fashion industry. So ethical fashion most certainly is a feminist issue. This International Women's Day we will be focusing on these women, how we can best support them, and how buying a feminist slogan t-shirt is not the answer. There are also many events taking place across the country including Women of the World Festival at Southbank Centre which features lectures, debates and workshops.

EARTH HOUR

Started by WWF and partners as a symbolic lights-out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now one of the world's largest grassroots movements for the environment, engaging millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories. It has become a catalyst for positive environmental impact, driving major legislative changes by harnessing the power of the people. Everyone can get involved simply by switching their lights off for an hour on 28th March at 8.30pm, but there is lots more besides - take a look online for details.

MOTHERS DAY

Mums deserve the best every day of the year but Mothers Day (22nd March) is a chance to go all out and show her how much everything she does for you means. Get the kids involved with making something sweet - anything home made always goes down well, let her have a lie and some time to herself (an hours peace can be the greatest gift of all - take it from someone who knows!). For something that bit extra check out our sustainable accessories - an engraved Kind Collection necklace might be our ultimate Mothers Day gift with a cashmere scarf from Kannava comes a close second!

REBEL BOOK CLUB

We love a good read at G&S and this year are making a concerted effort to do more of it. So we were delighted to discover the brilliant Rebel Book Club - a members club which encourages 'accelerated reading habits in a distracted world' - you get an enriching monthly non-fiction book to read,  the opportunity to connect with others both online and at monthly meet ups and the odd cocktail too... find them at www.rebelbookclub.com. Highly recommended!

SPRING CLEANING

There is something so therapeutic about a spot of spring cleaning. Putting aside a weekend to get the house in order and give everything arefresh will make it all look better but also make you feel good too. We've recently discovered some great eco cleaning brands including the lovely Tincture whose products smell like something more about of spa than a cleaning cupboard.

WHAT TO EAT

Purple sprouting broccoli. So good for you and so delicious. We love it steamed simply with olive oil and some seasalt but you can get much more creative adding it anything and everything. We especially love it with cheese or eggs. Meanwhile forced rhubarb is coming up which is an absolute treat. Roast it and turn it into a compote to go with thick greek yoghurt or for the ultimate comfort put it into a crumble served with lashings of custard. Yum!

WHAT TO WEAR

Spring is in and we have new Vejas!! So excited with our new drop including the gorgeous V-10 Petale and Orange Fluro which seem just right for spring. We're also layering up new spring arrivals from the beautiful Hamaji (their trousers work just as well with a chunky knit as they do with the matching top) and Rakha. We are getting all excited for the change in seasons!
